It's Unity festival week in Muskegon (meaning lots of Christian bands down along the lake) - but nothing in the church creates less unity than music. Matt did a series of posts all last week about music and worship (which music/singing is just one aspect of worship). We have a unique culture at The Journey and so our music/singing time looks different than many churches. It doesn't make us right and them wrong - but certainly different.
There have been times where people have been bothered/concerned because a lot of people don't sing. But, think about it - where else do we sing in public?? The National Anthem, or Happy Birthday are about it. We have about 60% of The Journey that wasn't attending church before coming. I've talked to numerous people who said they didn't sing for the first 6 months - but they were listening.
Some people don't like how loud the music is. Sometimes it's too loud for me. I actually like (my preference) the music to be louder because then I can really sing out without feeling self-conscious that everyone can hear me. While others want to hear everyone else sing. Funny.
You may like what we do at The Journey, and you may not. But make no mistake, we do what we do for a reason. There's a purpose to the songs we sing, to the sound we have, etc. To find out more check out Matt's blog!
