People make up their minds about a place (including church) during the first five minutes after they show up and the last five minutes before they leave. Which means, that 1. they need to feel like this is a place where they can come and feel comfortable; 2. they need to feel like there are some people that maybe they could get to know and like; and 3. that they don't feel totally lost and wondering what is going on.
That's why our host roles are so important. To have friendly people just saying hi. That's why we have "roaming hosts" whose sole assignment is to look for new people who are kind of looking around trying to figure out the place. The roaming hosts then will go up and greet them (usually with a "I don't know if I've met you before") and then walk them around and show them what they need to be shown (especially when they have children who need to be checked in).
That's why the Journey Java Bar is so important. There's a comfort level that comes with a cup of coffee in your hand. That's why we give it away for free. Often, people will ask if they can bring it in to the auditorium, and are surprised when we say sure. And our Java Bar workers do an awesome job!
That's why our Kids Check-in area is so important. We want parents to be greeted in a friendly and professional way. We want them to know their child will be safe and have a blast and if their child needs them, we have a system in place to get the parents quickly.
That's why we look to end services with some energy. We don't always do this, but this is why we like to end big.
That's why we have those big blue signs, so that people can easily see where bathrooms, kids rooms, and the auditorium are.
That's why we have hosts at the end of the morning, holding the doors as people leave and saying "have a good week", etc.
For those of you who serve. Thank you for making the first five, last five a great experience for others. Thank you for the way you hold off on talking to some of your friends to make sure others are greeted. Thank you for being aware that every single Sunday we have multiple people who are at The Journey for the first time!
